My 5 Keys to Happiness // Healthy Habits

“I love people who
make me laugh. I honestly think it’s the thing I like most, to laugh. It cures
a multitude of ills. It’s probably the most important thing in a person.”
–Audrey Hepburn

For today’s Healthy Habits
link up I want to do something a little different.  I want to talk a little more about mental
health rather than physical health.  I wanted
to talk about the importance of happiness and laughter.  You know the saying misery loves
company?  It’s not great for your health
either as researchers say.  Negative
emotions can cause higher levels of stress as I’m sure we all know and stress
causes so many health problems that I’m sure a lot of us would love to do
without.  I did a little research, and
this is what I found.
Happiness has been correlated
with better health, both in individuals and communities.  Some studies
have even suggested that states of happiness may be associated with lower
stress-related hormones and better immune function. (via)

A Harvard University study found that
optimists are not only happier but are 50% less likely to have heart disease, a
heart attack or a stroke. It turns out that keeping a positive outlook actually
offers protection against cardiovascular disease. (via)

Research shows that laughing doesn’t just signal happiness, it
produces it. When we laugh, our stress hormones decrease and our endorphins
rise. Endorphins are the same brain chemicals associated with the
“runner’s high” you get from exercise.

Laughing is also good for your
heart. A study found that only 8% of heart patients who were made to laugh
daily had a second heart attack within a year, compared with 42% of the
non-laughers.
Studies show our bodies can’t differentiate between
fake and real laughter; you’ll get the health boost either way. So you can even
fake it until you make it. Laugh in your car, in the shower — force yourself
to start laughing a few minutes every day. (via)

Don’t get me wrong with the day
time job I have (Marketing) it gets super stressful and sometimes I have to get
up and walk away from my desk because I can feel my mind just spiraling out of
control.  I still remain as happy as I
can be.  Outside of work I have decided
that I won’t carry whatever happened at work with me, and on top of that,
whatever happened the day before is history because it’s a new day.  So how do I stay happy?  I want to share with you, 5 ways that I stay
happy.
1.  The Past is the Past
As I stated previously that what
happens the day before is exactly the that.
It’s the day before so whatever happened leave it there.  Today is a new day.  It’s a new beginning.  Think of today as a fresh start.  Even if there are unresolved issues from
yesterday, at least you can look at them with a clearer view now.  If you have unresolved issues whether it be
personal or work, try to take care of these the day before.  You’re only going to stress yourself out and
worry until it is resolved, at least I know I do.
2.  “Happy girls are the prettiest
girls.”
Yes, this is another Audrey Hepburn quote.  This can also be the same for
guys so happy guys are the most handsome guys.
Audrey Hepburn really knew what she was talking about with this
quote.  I mean just look at yourself in
the mirror when you’re happy and when you’re upset.  You just don’t look the same.  When you’re upset you don’t look approachable
and people don’t want to be a part of the negative vibes that you have going
on.  However, if you have a smile on your
face or even if you’re laughing you just look so much better and nicer.  People want to be around positive energy
because they can think of you as the sunshine that makes their day
brighter.  I don’t like to take life too
seriously.  Now hear me out before you
start shaking your head.  Certain
situations I’ll be serious but other than that, why do we all have to be so
serious all the time, loosen up, joke a little!
3.  Take a deep breath and
exhale
I don’t care what anyone says,
sometimes doing this really helps.  You
exhale all of the negative emotions and feelings and carry on with life.  Whether this be actually physically exhaling, or just taking a mental break from your everyday life.  When you’re stressing out you need to find at least 5 minutes to sit down and relax.  Sometimes even just walking to the bathroom at work can be used to de-stress.
4.  Experience
I really can’t stress enough how
important it is to experience new things. This keeps life interesting and you
won’t be stuck in the same monotonous routine because let’s face it, routines
are no fun.  After a while everything
just gets boring and where’s the fun in that?
Over the past few years life has changed so much and once I took that
leap of faith to start experiencing different things my days became a little
brighter and exciting.  Even with my
blogging, it’s been such an amazing journey with all of the things I’ve done
and all of the people I’ve met.  You don’t
have to spend money on traveling or something to experience new things
either.  How about taking a hike at your
local state forest?  Or what about going
to that winery you pass by all the time and attending grape stomping?  It’s little experiences like this that don’t
cost you a $1200 plane ticket (well maybe not that much depending on where you’re
going) that are so much fun and definitely worth it.
5.  Learn to let go and move on
I know that letting go is
hard.  Trust me, I know.  Whether it be something happening at work or
something happening in your personal life let it go.  Reevaluate your life right now.  What is driving you absolutely bonkers?  Is it really worth it?  Is it really worth getting worked up over?
If you’ve read down to this point
I applaud you because that is A LOT of reading!
“Don’t worry, be happy.”

It really is a lot harder than I wrote it. It took me many years to learn how to do that and when I finally did it I felt so much better!
