Well, today is Independence Day or the 4th of
July. Today we are commemorating the
adoption of the Declaration of Independence back in 1776. AKA the birth of America. On this day, the United States of America was
no longer a part of the British Empire. Happy Birthday America!

I always tend to have funny stories, and today I’m sharing
another one. Now, as some of you know
even though I was born in America my entire background is Polish. My parents are immigrants from Poland and I’m
the first one in my family to be born outside of Poland. Yeah, I go down in history in my family. Anyway, when I was younger I knew that the 4th
of July was an American holiday but for some reason I got really confused that
day. I forget if it was my parents or
another Polish person that I asked but I started asking why don’t Polish people
celebrate the 4th of July.
Yes, I ACTUALLY asked that. Well
needless to say my ditzy little kid self was politely corrected and it was
explained to me that the 4th of July is an American holiday, and
that Poland has their own independence day as well.

I always have this feeling of almost an identity
crisis. I am proud to be an American but
I’m also proud of my roots. I feel like
I’m always defending one or the other. A
lot of other countries don’t like America or feel the need to talk badly about
us, so to those people I’m defending the beautiful country that I grew up
in. Then on the other hand when my
American friends are saying things about other countries or make Polish jokes
(I think I’ve heard every Polish joke 10890890 times) I’m defending my roots
that I’m so extremely proud of. But see,
at the same time, that’s the beauty of America.
Yes, we are Americans but we all have different backgrounds, unless your
Native American of course. At one point
if you’re not a Native American, you too were an immigrant, and you too come
from a history of your family coming here for a new life. I’ve heard and shared my parent’s story
numerous times. They came to America
with a suitcase (that’s all that was allowed back in the early 80’s coming from
Poland) and $5 to their name. Fast
forward however many years and they made something of themselves. Yes, they worked hard, and yes their lives
were not easy in the beginning but they knew they could make it here, and they
did just that. That’s why I’m proud to
be a Polish American. I come from Polish
immigrant parents who worked their butts off in this country, but I’m also
proud to be an American, even if I don’t agree with a lot of political things
going on. THAT opinion, however I will
NOT discuss on this blog. Politics was
something my parents always said to keep to yourself, you can lose friendships
that way haha!

Anyway, there I go rambling!
I’m going to leave you with some Patriotic lyrics for y’all to
ponder about. HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA!
ponder about. HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA!
I thank my lucky stars
To be living here today
Cause the flag still stands for freedom
And they can’t take that away
And I’m proud to be an American
Where at least I know I’m free
And I won’t forget the men who died
Who gave that right to me
And I’d glady stand up next to you
And defend her still today
Cause there ain’t no doubt
I love this land
God Bless the USA
I thank god for my life
And for the stars and stripes
May freedom forever fly, let it ring
Salute the ones who died
And the ones that gave their lives so we don’t have to
sacrifice
sacrifice
All the things we love
