It seems like all anyone is talking about lately is the drama erupting between Kanye West, Kim Kardashian West, and Taylor Swift. The feud has to do with lyrics regarding Swift in one of Kanye’s newer songs, “Famous.” But if you don’t care about any of that, well, you’re not the only one. More importantly, amidst the recent drama between the three, a rare thing happened—some Kardashian news actually flew under the radar.
I know. When are they not in the media, right? Well, even if you have no interest in Kardashian-related news, Kim recently wore a pretty innovative outfit that’ll certainly pique fashion fans’ curiosity.
A report from People pointed out that Kim stepped out of a restaurant in Brentwood, Calif. wearing a salacious T-shirt dress. It’s worth noting that before seeing her outfit, that never would have been the appropriate adjective to describe a dress that looks like a slightly refined version of something comfortable to sleep in.
“Turning a tee into a dress, also known as the art of lampshading, is something her two youngest sisters, Kendall and Kylie, have already perfected, regularly sizing up their tops in order to ditch the bottom half,” wrote People contributor Emily Kirkpatrick. She went on to say that Kim “took things up a few notches with her own look by adding a belt on top of her long-sleeve Yeezy T-shirt that looks like a hybrid between a harness, a bustier, suspenders, and her much beloved waist trainer.”
Suffice it to say, Kim made the T-shirt dress look effortless and sexy with the simple addition of one bustier-like accessory.
Now, T-shirt dresses certainly aren’t anything new. If you look through Lyst’s site, you can see plenty of different designers presenting their spin on an otherwise plain-Jane style. Y-3 gave theirs an asymmetrical twist while ASOS incorporated bright, bold patterns. Moschino even has one with a blown-up dry cleaning receipt printed on it. They’re fun, but none of them showcased their styles in the form-fitted way that Kim K showed off her T-shirt dress.
If you’re looking for the same fitted look, grab a solid color variety of whoever’s design you prefer (or the one that your budget allows) and perhaps try fitting that trendy sleek bralette you bought a few months back over top of it. If that doesn’t fit, or the T-shirt dress material is too thick, you might have to buy a new bralette (Slate is here to help with that) or bustier a size or two bigger to accommodate the extra fabric. Black leather or faux leather looks great with most dark fabrics, while white is better for lighter shades.
You don’t have to love the Kardashians, but there’s no denying that they’re trendsetters. Try this look out for yourself, and see if you don’t fall in love with the new, fitted T-shirt dress.
