Everyone, yesterday I kicked off my Epilepsy Awareness
series! I wanted to kind of talk about
Epilepsy a little bit since a lot of times when I say epilepsy, to my surprise
people don’t know what it is or they say something along the lines of “is that
kind of like narcolepsy?” I wanted to
talk about epilepsy awareness since November is epilepsy awareness month, and
because I was diagnosed back in 2005. I’ll
talk more about my story tomorrow, but for today let me just introduce a little
bit about this condition.

The actual definition for epilepsy is as follows:
A disorder in which nerve cell activity in the brain is
disturbed, causing seizures. Can’t be
cured, but treatment may help. Requires
a medical diagnosis. Lab tests or
imaging often required.

Epilepsy may occur as a result of a genetic disorder or an
acquired brain injusry, such as a trauma or stroke. During a seizure, a person experiences
abnormal behavior, symptoms, and sensations, sometimes including loss of
consciousness.

So that’s just a little bit about epilepsy for now. Stay tuned for the rest of the week as I talk
more about epilepsy and my story.
