Alright y’all, today I’m feeling the need to have a little rant. Well, it’s more of a realization than a rant. Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of podcasts by Joe Rogan. If you look up his podcast it’s called The Joe Rogan Experience. He’s had a lot of super interesting people on there. He’s had various guests, from unconventional doctors, to dieticians, to celebrities, comedians, fighters, etc. One of the most recent podcasts that I extremely enjoyed listening to was one with Russell Brand. Now I know he’s slightly out there with his thinking and a lot of people might associate him with an extremely eclectic personality, but he’s actually a much deeper thinker than most people give him credit for and I love that he’s not conforming to society, he’s his own person.
One of the major things that Russell Brand said, has stuck out in my mind like crazy. He said that people who work in the corporate environment basically just get accustomed to living in a routine, they do the same thing every day, and they are just content with life with nothing else going on. Their creativity just gets sucked out of them. Another thing he mentioned was how cubicles/cubicle life just sucks the soul right out of you. To be completely honest, he’s right. That’s why I have this blog, but even with this blog, I feel myself slowly but surely losing hold of the creativity that I once had. Now, I’ve never complained about my full time job here on the blog and I don’t plan on starting but when I heard that in the podcast, I had a flashback to last week. There was an incident that happened that made me feel like just another number, unappreciated, and replaceable. This is the first time in five years that I ever felt THIS bad. I understand that EVERYONE is replaceable; it’s not that hard to train people to do a job. It’s just a matter of can they do it right or as good or even better than their predecessor. However, what happened just really opened my eyes and made me realize a lot of things.
That’s when I started thinking even deeper. Most of my life I’ve conformed to the norm and been a rule follower. I wasn’t a big risk taker because I was afraid of failing, and also afraid of upsetting other people, along with getting in trouble which has extended into my adult life. I’m a people pleaser. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but lately I’ve been putting my foot down and being selfish and not following the rules and people don’t like it. It’s almost liberating because this is how I was for a short period of time in high school to college and that is when I felt the most free and the most like me. People don’t like it because I’m finally doing what I want to do, not what they want, and I finally am having my opinions heard. I realized after listening to this podcast that life is too short to be upset all the time. You need to create your own happiness, and you need to be innovative which includes breaking the rules and not caring what other people think. For most of my life I was so freakin’ concerned about everyone else and what will everyone think, and you want to know something? Eff those people. Why do I want to try and please someone who will just complain about me in the end anyway because I was only “perfect” 99.9% of the time? People will always remember that one time you were a terrible person and completely cancel out all the times that you were awesome.
Some of the most amazing and genius people of our time have been the people who don’t conform, who think outside the box, and who don’t do what they are told. Steve Jobs for example, he never finished college and look at the empire that he built. Look at Elon Musk, he just launched HIS OWN ROCKET WITH HIS OWN TESLA INTO SPACE! He taught himself computer programming at the age of 12. Rachel Ray, never went to college and doesn’t have any formal training in the culinary arts and she has her own cooking show and merchandise. These are just 3 examples of extremely driven and passionate people that I can think of off the top of my head.
Too many times people are told to conform and do what they are told, which is why you have so many depressed robots in the world. *The following is just in my opinion, not an actual fact, so keep that in mind.* It’s the reason why people resent their spouses and resent having children or even hate coming home after work. It’s the reason why people have affairs because they need to “spice up” their life. I don’t agree with this at all, but I mean let’s face it, divorce rates are sky high. Instead of people marrying and committing to someone for life because they truly love that person, they get married because society said so. If you date someone for 10 years, it’s possible that they are not the one and you don’t have to settle down with them just because that’s the next step. If you choose to break up with them will it suck? Well, I mean yea, they were an important part of the past 10 years. Some people get stressed out because they’re already past a certain age and aren’t even dating anyone yet. So? When the timing is right, things will fall into place. I had someone tell me once that I needed to freeze my eggs (at age 24) because I was getting older. I’m currently 30 and still have not frozen my eggs, nor am I worried about having children or have baby fever.
People have forgotten how to work with their hands and how to be able to create something and be proud of it. This blog isn’t anything special, but it’s something I’m so incredibly proud of. Too many people have been told to go to college instead of going to a trade school. College and the education system IS NOT FOR EVERYONE. They don’t even teach proper history which I can attest to 110%. The style of teaching IS NOT FOR EVERYONE. My fiancé and I are the perfect example. He wanted to become an engineer and he would’ve made a damn good one, however our high school told him that with his grades he shouldn’t even bother applying to college. What guidance counselor says that? So instead he applied to a trade school to become a mechanic. He has a brilliant mind and even though he didn’t go to college is much smarter than about 99.9% of people I know who did go to college. He can fix anything. Whether it’s a computer, a car, a tractor, electric, or anything else that requires some kind of fixing he can do it. He’s built things from scratch like computers and cars, along with building a house from the foundation up with his dad. He taught himself how to do many things in life and is a fast learner.
Then there’s me, the rule follower. I went to college and did exactly what I was told. When I was in high school I wanted to go to tech school for cosmetology so that once I graduated I had something to fall back on and a way to pay my way through college. I didn’t go because my parents were strictly college focused and thought that I would drop out of college to be a hairdresser, which in my opinion isn’t a bad route either. Would I be making the same amount of money as I am now? Most likely not, but maybe that was my true calling and I missed out, all because I listened and followed the rules. I don’t resent my parents for this, because maybe I would’ve been a complete failure at cosmetology, but I do eventually in my life want to go to cosmetology school. I mean, if I lose my job, I have no other skills, whereas with trade jobs, someone is ALWAYS looking for a mechanic, or a hair dresser, or a welder, etc. When it comes to the corporate world it’s not really what you know, but who you know and how you handle yourself. You can have a Ph.D and be a genius, but if you walk into an interview not sure of yourself and extremely quiet, you’re not going to get hired. Meanwhile someone with a Bachelors can walk in and be extremely confident and get the job right on the spot.
I’m not saying don’t go to college, because I did and I went to receive two degrees, my B.S. and my MBA. No one can take that education away from me, but to be honest, I learned more in the real world and life after college, than any textbook ever taught me. I’m still proud of myself for getting a college education, but at the same time, I’m stuck paying student loans for what seems like forever, while other people don’t have to worry about that and are living a great life too.
What I AM trying to say is, if you feel extremely passionate about something, follow that passion because you never know what that might be bring you. It might bring you greatness, but it might also bring you extreme failure. No matter how many times you fail, always get right back on your feet. Always keep those creative juices flowing, and never let anyone take that away from you. Don’t let your job and society suck the soul out of you. Rules are meant to be broken.
As a side note, this top and skirt I received from MakeMeChic and I must say I absolutely love them! The top could be a little better quality, but for what it’s supposed to be it’s really not bad. I love love love the skirt though. I got it a little tighter because, since I’m losing weight, I know this will fit nicely in a few months! I hate when my clothes are too big where I’m swimming in them.
