I am 30 years old now and I have a full time corporate job that consumes most of my time. Each day, I am constantly learning not only at work, but also at home when I am running my website. Most of the time, I am not even going out of my way to learn – a new opportunity just falls in my lap, but when I do not have a learning opportunity, I go out and seek one. Why, you ask? According to the World Health Organization, active aging is defined as “the process of optimizing opportunities for health, participation and security in order to enhance quality of life as people age.” And, when they talk about health, they do not mean just physical health, it also includes physical, mental and social well-being, and to stay in tip top mental shape, you need to consistently use your brain and learn.
Most think that after your pass your young ages when you are in school, you stop learning all of the essentials, or that you do not need to learn more, but this is not true at all. Although (depending on the person) we learn different things, I believe that continuing to learn as you age is just as important and natural. Each new day that passes gives us the opportunity to learn more. Maybe it is something as simple as learning a new dance move, or maybe it is more essential, like how to use a new computer program at work. Either way, we are learning daily and more and more people are going out of their way to learn each day. Entrepreneur.com says, ”Pursuit of knowledge is easier than it has ever been before, as technological advances can relay information instantaneously to our fingertips. It’s a modern day privilege to take this convenience and utilize it in productive ways.”
There are many ways to continue learning as you age. Here are a few examples:
College Classes:
College classes are perfect for continuing to learn, but it is time consuming. Unfortunately, I do not have the needed time right now, but if you do have the time, this could be a great option for you. Colleges offer classes such as cooking, sewing, working out, and of course all of your basics, as well. If you have a college or university close to your home, I would definitely check it out to see what you could be interested in.
Online Videos:
If you have a home project to do, or if you want to learn a certain skill or technique, a great place to start could be online videos. Like I mentioned above, we have tons of information at our fingertips thanks to technological advances and it makes learning new information a lot more accessible than it used to be. If you are wanting to learn how to build a wood table, or change the oil on your car, all you have to do is type it into Google and you have many choices to pick from.
Dance:
Dancing is fantastic way to exercise and learn at the same time and the great thing about it is that it can be for all ages since there are so many different types of dance classes available. Barre is a dance workout class that is available for everyone. They designed a dance workout program that is not hard on your joints, but instead, targets muscle and fat. This means that no matter what shape you are in, you will be able to take this class and learn how to do the moves.
Cooking:
Although you might not think of cooking a new dish learning, it definitely is. Preparing a new meal is a great way to learn new techniques, or at the very least, a new way to learn how to pair ingredients together. It is a great, simple way that almost anyone can do to keep their brain working.
Teaching:
Teaching has always been so helpful when it comes to learning. I remember when I was in school, teaching the new material that we were learning was a great way to engrave it in my brain. If a friend needed help with a formula, I was glad to help out because I knew it was a win-win for both of us. Find a way to teach in daily life, whatever it might be.
While there are so many ways to learn, we also need to remember that you need a good foundation to learn on.
