Today is Epilepsy Awareness Day. In case you’re a new reader of my blog, today is a very special awareness day for me because I was diagnosed with Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy in 2005. I was in high school when the symptoms started, and I had my first seizure when it was the morning of our white water rafting trip. My parents and I thought I had just passed out from being too tired, but then, I had my second seizure after project graduation. I’m not sure if that’s still a thing, but it was all of us senior in a YMCA type of place overnight and there are no rules. Needless to say, I didn’t sleep, and the next morning when I got home and napped for an hour before work, I had my second seizure. This is when we realized that something was wrong. After a lot of doctor’s visits, and a lot of specialists, along with hospital visits, lots of testing, every neurologist gave me the same diagnosis. I was put on medication that has controlled my seizures for the past 14 years.
I may sound like a broken to a lot of you who have been following me for a while, but this is my life. It’s actually a big part of my life. I’ve had my ups and downs, and have learned that no matter how hard it can get, you have to keep going. When I was diagnosed, I forever wondered why I had to end up with epilepsy. I was brought up really healthy, and there are no traces of epilepsy in my family (we went back generations and generations), but somehow I ended up with this. It brought my life to a screeching halt a few times, but I just had to keep going. Whenever life gets tough, I always remember back to the day that I was diagnosed and how scared I was and how I thought my life was over. To anyone reading this that has epilepsy, I want you to know that you are not alone, and if you ever need anyone to talk to about anything whether it’s a good or bad conversation, I am always here, and you can always email me.
Seize the day.
