Romper:Â Amazon (sold out, similar here) // Shoes:Â TJ Maxx (similar here) // Bag:Â DIY (no, this will not be for sale in my Etsy Store)
As y’all know, I opened up my Etsy Store again with some Macrame items. Back when I was first learning how to macrame, I came across a tutorial on how to make a purse. Now, I definitely made it my own, and I royally messed up once it was already too late, but I made it work haha! So, the DIY Macrame bag tutorial below might be a little iffy because I did mess up. See that huge flower? Yea, that’s covering up the issue. I do have other bags listed in my Etsy store, but this one holds a little bit more value. When I showed my mom the tutorial I wanted to follow, she actually went shopping at Michaels and sent me supplies for this purse. It took a while to finish, only because of that horrible job I had, and because I messed it up and was really disappointed in myself for doing that.
Let’s move on to the tutorial, shall we?
What you will need
2 Handles, I used these D Letters that my mom found at Michael’s
72 Pieces of 4 or 6mm cord at 82 inches (for 4mm) or 92 for 6 mm. I noticed that when you use a thicker cord you need more cord.
Add a total of 16 cords to each handle. Do this by using a Lark’s Head Knot and folding the cord in half.
You’re going to make square knots across the bag, and then connect them by adding 3 more square knots in a diagonal form.
As you can tell, this is where I realized that I messed up and added one too many square knots. But, never fear! I’ll eventually come up with an idea (the giant flower) to make this look normal.
Then you eventually make as many square knots as you can and connect the purse. When you connect the bottom, you make a square knot using both sides of the purse. You can choose to cut the fringe and then use a lighter to melt the pieces together, but I chose to keep it.
Now, since I made a mistake and miscalculated how many additions I made to the side of the purse, I decided to make a giant flower. There are some really good tutorials on Youtube that you can follow that make it much easier to follow than my pictures below.
See this tutorial on Youtube that I followed for the perfect flower macrame! If you are trying to make a bigger one, use a thicker cord, and cut the cords much bigger than the original tutorial. I also ended up threading the flower cord into the purse, and also securing it a little extra by sewing it on there a little bit. Just so that it has some added support.
Well, that’s my quick tutorial! Let’s move on to the linkup.

Monica, I do not have the patience for such crafty things, but what a cute bag (even with a little mistake). I think those little goof ups are what make our DIY projects so special. The flower is adorable! And I am loving your romper and these photos on the water! So pretty!

I think it would be fun to craft one of these with you, but I’m so bad about trying things like this on my own. The flower is the perfect added touch!!

Macrame is a lot easier than it looks. It’s just learning the different types of knots. I’m still following patterns, but adding little twists of my own onto them. I still look at youtube videos if I can’t seem to figure out a knot properly. It just takes practice 🙂
