Monday Motivation Series: Update on my health

If y’all read my Instagram post (here) you know that I mentioned something about my health.  Two weeks ago I went to my see my new neurologist here in Florida.  I needed to find a new one because obviously, I’m not going to be flying back to NJ to only have to spend an entire day in NYC going to my neurologist.  The stress of getting into the city, parking, then having to wait to only be seen for 5 minutes is just too much.  I did some research on this neurologist and I liked that she is younger (not that I’m discriminating against age, keep reading for why I say this), and I felt like she would be more open minded.  A lot of older doctors that I’ve dealt with are not willing to look outside the box.  Whereas this neurologist is an advocate for medical marijuana and she told me to continue to use the CBD Oil.  She also agreed to do something my previous neuro didn’t even want to look at and that’s testing out putting me on generic instead of brand name.  This is going to save me thousands of dollars a year.

With all of that being said, if you haven’t read any of my stories or updates on my epilepsy, the last time I was accidentally put on generic back in 2008 (thanks to the pharmacy not consulting with my doctor first), I actually had a seizure.  Now it’s not 100% known if it was specifically the generic, because there were other factors playing into when I had that seizure, but because of that incident my neuro didn’t want to experiment with generic ever again.

My new neuro was willing to test out the generic again.  The first week was extremely rough, probably because my body was going through withdrawal from the brand name medication.  We are slowly introducing the generic and so far so good.  I’m documenting the whole process, so once I’ve been fully on brand name for a while, I will share my story.  I’ve been trying to stay as positive and calm as possible because I really want this to work.  Stay tuned for more updates on this journey of mine.  I know it doesn’t seem like a big deal to some, but it’s a bigger deal than you think.

xoxo Monica

I hope the generic works out for you, my friend! I hear you about wanting a doctor that is more open minded. I am glad that you found a good fit with her. Sending you lots of positive energy!

Thanks so much! So far so good! However, the blood tests will be the final yes or no, because she has to make sure it’s in my blood the same way the brand name was. I’m ok with upping the dosage though. The generic cost me less than $20 whereas the brand name will cost me hundreds a month, $15,000 over the year. Crossing my fingers for sure!
