How to be super stylish – 5 top tips
Firstly, hi!! I’m Maria from Passion fruit, Paws and Peonies and I’m delighted to be guest hosting for the lovely Monica while she’s on holiday.
As my blog is all about living an elegant life, I thought I’d chat to you about style.
I absolutely love stylish and elegant clothing. On the flip side, I’m actually rather afraid of fashion. As a teenager of the 80’s in England, perhaps that’s understandable. Lace gloves and sharp shoulders just aren’t my thing. I am still trying to get over it…
Instead, I have always loved the look of ladies like Audrey Hepburn, Sophia Loren and Jane Birkin. Parisian influences and taking ownership of your curves being my main passions. The effortless look can be quite tricky to pull off. Just like a simple omelette, there is no-where to hide, if it’s wrong, you can see it.
So, I have put together a few tips that I try to stick to in hope that I get some way to achieving this elegant style.
- Keep your outfit simple
Less really is sometimes more, if you want to achieve a super stylish look. One thing I think about in front of the mirror before I step out is ‘Is there anything I can take away?’. Sometimes it’s a piece of jewellery, occasionally it’s been one layer (do you need a cardigan and a jacket?).
A simple look can often look more elegant and stylish.
2. The cut is all important
When you invest in a well cut item of clothing it will speak for itself. This leads easily to dressing simply and stylishly. Investing in higher quality classics that are well cut will give you an instant elegance.
Keep to your budget by buying fewer items and picking pieces that can mix and match easily. They should last for years without going out of style. That’s why they are called investment pieces after all!
3. Enjoy fashion, but approach cautiously
Okay I am damaged goods in this department for sure. Born in the 60’s (cool), a child of the 70’s (uber cool), a teenager of the 80’s (shocking), finding my feet in the 90’s (matching bags, shoes and lippy)… it’s been a journey. Finally all grown up I’ve learnt what my style is.
To be stylish, know yours. Your style will suit you, flatter you, represent you. You will feel comfortable in it. Once you have it, allow fashion to influence it rather than rule over it.
Approach fashion with caution. Can you see yourself cringing at it in a few years time. Will you say ‘that really wasn’t me’ when you see yourself in frills and bows?
It’s stylish to be true to yourself.
4. Don’t show too much flesh
Flesh is lovely. We all love a bit of flesh. Just not too much, all in your face, all at once. Over the canapés.
The stylish rules go something like this. If your beautiful legs are on display, cover up the pups. If your scrumptious back is out, maybe cover those legs…
Of course there are times it’s going to be all out, in summer for example. I’m talking generally here about dressing stylishly and elegantly.
5. Confidence is the most important accessory!
The most beautiful thing is to see a happy confident woman, whatever your style may be. We all have different ideas on how to dress, but isn’t that exciting?! So, DO you. Dress so you are at your most confident. Because after all, that’s probably the most stylish thing of all!
Thank you Monica for letting me hop on here. And if anyone wants to follow me, I’d be chuffed to bits to have you! x

These are great tips Maria and your tiered halter maxi dress is a beauty! I totally agree that style is something we all find within ourselves and not dictated by what is on trend but what is even more important in my opinion is confidence is key. It’s important to be confident in your own skin. It really doesn’t matter what you wear so long as you are confident then you are unstoppable!
