For today’s 5 for Friday post I wanted to talk about some Epilepsy facts
since I know some people who didn’t even know what it was.

For today’s 5 for Friday post I wanted to talk about some Epilepsy facts

- 1 in 26 Americans will
develop epilepsy in their lifetime. An
estimated 3 million Americans and 65 million people worldwide currently live
with epilepsy. Each year at least 200,000
people are diagnosed with epilepsy. In
two thirds of patients diagnosed, the cause is unknown. - Epilepsy is a chronic
noncummicable disorder of the brain that affects people of all ages. Epilepsy is one of the most common
neurological diseases globally. - Epilepsy is not contagious
and is not caused by mental illness or mental retardation. Sometimes severe seizures can cause brain
damage. Epilepsy has many possible
causes, from illness to brain damage to abnormal brain development. - While many forms of epilepsy
require lifelong treatment to control the seizures, for some people the
seizures eventually go away. The odds of
becoming seizure-free are not as good for adults or for children with severe
epilepsy syndromes, but it is possible that seizures can decrease over time. - There are different types of
epilepsy and seizures. Grand mal
seizures are the ones you hear most commonly which are the most severe. Absence, myoclonic, clonic, tonic, and atonic
are the other types of seizures.
In case you missed this week’s posts, here they are! I talked about my story with Epilepsy and just all around awareness to this condition.
